What is Russian Olive?

Russian Olive, a native tree species of Europe and Asia, was first introduced into the western United States at the turn of the century.  Its ease of establishment, even in dry areas, made it popular for use in landscaping, as a soil stabilizer, and as a wind break. However, Russian Olive's ability to thrive and reproduce also results in the displacement of native plant species, especially in river ecosystems. Even ornamental Russian Olives planted far from river corridors can result in the establishment of Russian Olive in riparian areas. Russian Olive seedlings develop and mature rapidly in fertile soils along river banks, creating a seed source that rapidly spreads along the river corridor.  Once Russian Olive is established dramatic changes occur within the ecosystem.  Russian Olives grow in very dense stands that restrict the growth of other species and limit the ecosystems ability to sustain native species.
